395 U.S. Route 1, Falmouth, ME
Re: Behind a very unassuming sign and in a tiny pink building, there's a wonderful selection of treats and delights along the old highway in Falmouth, Maine. European Bakery is a family run place, serving all manner of sweets and treats, from Whoopie Pies to fruit tarts. They also make pies, cookies, tarts and amazing looking wedding cakes.
Outstanding: Their assorted goodies are made from fresh, high quality ingredients and are decadent as all get out. The chocolate is rich and creamy and their pastries are light and crumbly. The best carrot cake I have ever had in my entire life. A large selection of treats to choose from.
Unacceptable: Like most premium bakeries, their prices are a bit high, but not excessive. Their hours and somewhat off the beaten path location makes it hard to visit.
Summary: While some of their creations are a little on the spendy side, we've stopped twice here as a little reward after a day in Portland and everything we've gotten has been delightful in their own ways. The people manning the counter there are friendly too, and can make great recommendations.
Notes: In addition to being locally owned and run, they also sponsor apprentice chefs from Switzerland, who train and work here for 18 months at a time.
